Wat is IT-governance en waarom is het belangrijk voor het management van de IT in uw organisatie?

IT Governance staat volop in de belangstelling. Er wordt veel over geschreven en gesproken. Daarbij worden echter verschillende definities gebruikt. Het is dus nuttig om eerst vast te stellen wat er onder wordt verstaan. De Oxford English Dictionary geeft bij 'governance' o.a. de volgende betekenissen:

• The action or manner of governing (controlling, directing, or regulating influence).
• The office, function, or power of governing; authority or permission to govern.
• The manner in which something is governed or regulated; method of management, system of regulations.

De meest gebruikte definitie van 'IT governance' is opgesteld door het IT Governance institute:

IT governance is the responsibility of the board of directors and executive management. It is an integral part of enterprise governance and consists of the leadership and organizational structures and processes that ensure that the organization’s IT sustains and extends the organization’s strategies and objectives.

Het garanderen dat de IT de bedrijfsstrategie en doelstellingen ondersteunt en versterkt is dus het doel van IT governance. Om dat doel te bereiken zijn leiderschap, organisatiestructuren en processen nodig.
